Canadian designer Brian Bailey celebrates a milestone and shows his blue colours.
By Sarah Casselman
Brian Bailey knows how to sell clothes. Whether he’s at the design studio or on The Shopping Channel, this 54-year-old fashion-industry veteran whips up impeccably tailored collections, ranging from investment pieces (red carpet– worthy gowns) to snap-them-up staples (animal-print cardis). The best part is that he makes both regular and plus-size lines; he was the first Canadian designer to offer both options. Bailey launched his eponymous label in 1992, and by 2000, he had opened two flagship boutiques in Toronto. Then television came calling. In 2007, he designed an accessibly priced capsule collection exclusively for The Shopping Channel. It sold out within 24 hours, making it the highest-rated designer launch in the channel’s history. He also played mentor on Project Runway Canada for two seasons. Today, this Canadian fashion star continues to shine.
What Was the inspiration behind this dress?
“First, the colour. I included this cobalt blue in my first collection. The dress has simplicity, fine craftsman- ship and design that reflects strength of character.”
How did you get into the world of fashion design?
“My first love was architecture, and this love of design on the human form became my ultimate love.”
What do you enjoy most about the design process?
“Realizing the power of it. Fashion is about your costume for the day and it reflects how you are feeling.”
What’s next for the Brian Bailey brand?
“I feel endless possibilities. I feel strongly about taking on the design for an airline from south of our border— a beautiful uniform makes the whole economy of a company so much stronger.”

How will you celebrate your 20th anniversary this year?

“My yearly pilgrimage to Tibet will do me just fine. I’ve got many things to be thankful for.”
